Tampa Bay Carnival - 2008 |
For the second year in a row, Trini Jungle Juice landed in Tampa Florida, to bring you exclusive coverage of the annual Tampa Bay Carnival. In 2007, president of Tampa Carnival Committee, George Carrington, told us that for 2008 he will be doing bigger and better things. Well yuh know dey say, "True talk ... No lie." Tampa Bay Carnival 2008 got off to a great start on Saturday June 14th at the Vinoy Park located Downtown St. Petersburg.
With a beautiful location - situated right on the beach front, Vinoy Park was the perfect place to hold the 16th Annual Carnival Celebration. Trust us when we tell yuh ... niceness. With both food and craft vendors in their multitudes, the flow of traffic from the food stalls, to the vendors, to the stage-front was almost automatic. And in between everything, steel pan enthusiasts could find the likes of Joumberie, New Generation Steel, Power Stars, Spirit of Steel and the Tamboo Bamboo Rhythm Section all in full swing. And believe it or not, this was just the beginning of the evening folks!!

Ivy Queen, the undisputed "Queen of Reggaeton," was born Martha Ivelisse Pesante on March 4, 1972, in Afiasco, Puerto Rico. She moved with her parents to New York as a child, but the family relocated back to Afiasco while Martha was a teenager, and she finished her public education in Puerto Rico, becoming more and more fascinated and involved with the active underground world of Latin hip hop.
She moved to San Juan at the age of 18, where she met rapper and producer DJ Negro, who helped her earn performing spots at The Noise, a club catering to the emerging reggaeton scene. DJ Negro began producing a series of CDs centered around The Noise, and Martha -- as Ivy Queen -- made her first appearance on the fifth installment of the CD series with a track called "Somos Raperos Pero no Delincuentes."

As the Carnival celebrations continued in Tampa, the next stop was the West Convention Center where the never aging Byron Lee & the Dragonaires were performing. We arrived to a packed house with lots of beautiful people. The Dragonaires were already in full swing, playing renditions of long time Carnival hits. There were many familiar faces in the house, including Leon Coldero & Code 868 (who were schedule to perform later that night), the Asylum Band, Seebee from De Panyard (Atlanta) and the GCCDC crew from ATL ...
all showing nuff luv to the TJJ family.
